Mitcham’s Hidden Hundred – part 1

The names of a large group of Mitcham’s fallen do not appear on any local memorial. The preferences and wishes of their next of kin is likely to be the overriding reason, rather than a failure to meet the criteria set by the committees overseeing Mitcham’s war memorials. Their claim for inclusion based on residence and familial ties would have been as strong as any of Mitcham’s war dead.  The reticence of those mourning their loss has kept the names of their loved ones for the most private of memories.

A hundred years on and they are the shadowy figures in dusty records which only the most determined of searchers are likely to find. Yet they are no different to those named at Lower Green.  Among their ranks are pre-war regulars, volunteers and conscripts. Men who served on land, sea and in the air.  Not just with the British, but with the Canadians and Australians too.
